In the past two weeks there has been a lot of coverage regarding Iran and Saudi Arabia’s bid to join UN Women. UN Women is a merge of four departments within the UN whose focus is on women’s rights:
Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW)
International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)
United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
Looking at the four, you’ll see that they all work towards achieving equality, through research, funding, training and so on.
Most of the reports on Saudi Arabia becoming a member were expressed with incredulity, one going as far as calling it a joke. I can understand their misgivings but the issue lies on what type of organization will result from this merge. If by signing on Saudi Arabia, it is meant that Saudi has eradicated discrimination, abuse and inequality, then of course it takes no expert to tell you that that is absurd. However if by signing on, it will mean that Saudi will work towards that goal, then women in Saudi need all the help they can get.
If you go back to UN Women’s website, you’ll find that their aim is not a checklist of countries who have given women their full rights. Their board members are not supposed to sign a document and then pretend everything is ok. In a direct response to the question: How will UN Women work with UN Member States? on the FAQ page, the answer was:
One of the main aims of creating UN Women is to strengthen the UN’s ability to provide coherent, timely and demand-driven support to UN Member States, at their request, in their efforts to realize equality for all women and girls. It will be up to each Member State to decide what kind of support UN Women will provide in that country.
I don’t believe much can be accomplished by rejecting Saudi Arabia. All over the world women are treated unequally and abused in differing degrees so the majority of the countries on the board of the new UN Women do have women issues in their own countries. Ethiopia, Pakistan, India and even Congo are now UN Women member states! Yes Saudi Arabia is on the extreme side of the spectrum but that’s all the more reason to include it. By including it, UN Women will be able to gain access and document the ongoing gender apartheid. It could engage Saudis and educate women here on their rights. Generally speaking, inclusion could translate into a more proactive and direct influence.

I think that it might just make KSA more conscientious and understanding about coming up to world standards as far as women go – and that can’t hurt.
I think human rights in general and women rights in particular are everybody’s concern in Saudi Arabia and everywhere, however, this is not the issue.
The issue is about the source and the application. When it comes to our source, it inherits with it a very strict regulations for the treatment of women.
The application of the contents in that source can be either flexibly eased or rigidly tightened, depends on the perception of the those contents, and the degree of fundamentalism and conservatism the society is.
Our society is so fundamental and conservative that it can fight and arise troubles against those who may think of breaching any of its fundamentals.
The bottom line is that the decision makers (topped by the king and ministers) can have some sort of reforming agenda but they can not bring it down to the application.

Look around you, all Arabic/Islamic countries are conservative. So what makes Saudi Arabia so special? The holy mosques?

2 Form a new council of sheikhs, imported from somewhere else, and include female-sheikhs (like Aisha (ra)) in the new council
3 Cancel the PVPV and the islamic universities.
Reforms in the education system:
4 New topics in schools, evolution for example. Teach new things about life. Life is not people’s views on religion 1000 years ago. There are more interesting things in this world.
5 Try coeducation, obviously I am not the only one thinking about this as it is happening right now, take KAUST and school kids as examples. I don’t know about Norah university that was a step in the wrong direction.
6 Trust your youth and give them responsibilities. There is no escape to the young Saudi man except his laptop screen. We have a nation behind laptops. They can’t go out anywhere, they can’t even go to shopping malls (which is not that interesting to them either), they’re in an unbelievable state of boredom.

We must realize we have several institutions for teaching backwardness to people. It is not a matter of a conservative society or failure to adapt to modern life, it is giving power to the wrong people.
We make bad decisions? Change the decision makers. That’s how we should deal with them: FORCE, because if you talk to them they’ll keep referring you to 1400 years ago.
By #6 i mean the stupid idea of segregation of genders, ofcourse.

I’ve always enjoyed reading your blog and your opinions about your country. Your articles are well written and well researched, but one line in this article really left me in shock. While I do admit that India has much to do in terms of crimes against women like dowry harassment, female infanticide, sex selective abortions etc. you seem to hold an archaic, India is a third world country view of India and Indian women. The president of India, the speaker of the Indian parliament,president of the puling party and the chief minister of Delhi are women. These are just a few examples.

In addition, it allows special provisions to be made by the State in favour of women and children (Article 15(3)), renounces practices derogatory to the dignity of women (Article 51(A) (e)), and also allows for provisions to be made by the State for securing just and humane conditions of work and for maternity relief. (Article 42).
In 1953 Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit became the first woman (and first Indian) president of the United Nations General Assembly . Indira Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister of India for an aggregate period of fifteen years is the world’s longest serving woman Prime Minister.
Unlike places where women aren’t even allowed to drive a car an Indian women Justice M. Fathima Beevi became the first woman judge of the apex court, the Supreme Court of India in 1989. The MD and CEO of India’s second biggest bank ICICI is a woman, Candha Kocchar.
Women in India have a strong presence in the defense , journalism, politics, corporate world, judiciary, health and education, religion, sports, entertainment etc. Women in India have come a long way and still have a long way to go, but to club India with Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia etc. isn’t just unfair its downright ignorant.
